Full title: Once Upon a Time in SocialMedia Land: The Best, Worst, and Ugliest
What is SocialMedia? Can I catch it from somebody? Is it just a waste of time or does it have value? How can I use it?

Geared toward: Anyone with an interest in the pros, cons, and basics of the SocialMedia universe.
Session format: While this session can work well in a one-hour slot, a time allotment of ninety minutes or two hours provides the opportunity for much deeper audience engagement. And, after all, engagement is what social media is all about.
Venue Requirements: Minimum - data projector and screen, 120 VAC power for laptop. Recommended - realtime internet access.

Alternate format: A half-day workshop will allow deeper exploration of tools for blogging and interconnection of expanded social media platforms with existing websites and blogs.

Overview:

Primary platforms: We begin with SocialMedia definitions and a discussion of the basic details of the top players du jour (as of August 2011, Facebook®, Twitter®, LinkedIn® -- Google+® is coming hard and fast), the expectations, audience and general etiquette for each platform. Depending on the audience and time allotment, MySpace®, and other alternatives like StumbleUpon, Salon, can be included.

Blogging Platforms: A discussion of hosted blogs from WordPress®, Blogger®, and self-hosted blogs.

SocialMedia Resources: Information on websites like SocialMediaToday.com, Digg, Del.icio.us, Mashable.com

Best, Worst, and Ugliest:

B: Contemporary information about the positive sides: humanitarian activities, disaster relief, people connecting in positive ways.

W: Scams, spams, celebrity meltdowns, personal privacy, the privacy of friends and connections.

U: Flamewars, product disasters, and blog meltdowns.

Options for Extended Sessions:

SocialMedia Tools like TweetDeck®, HootSuite®, NetWorked Blogs, etc.

SocialMedia Apps for iPad, iPhone, and Android platforms (e.g. FlipBoard, Facely, etc.)
